With a bicycle at your vacation rental, you can go in any direction. Just run an errand, or discover an entire bike route, it's all possible. But do you take your own bike or do you rent bikes from a local bike rental? Both options have advantages and disadvantages. We list them for you.
Renting bikes on vacation
If you choose to rent bikes from a local bike rental, you won't have to worry about how to get the bike safely to your vacation destination. No hassle with bike carriers, tow straps and lugging heavy two-wheelers around. Now that's carefree enjoyment. Some bike rental companies even deliver the bikes to your vacation address.
Bike rental: large assortment
Where in the past you could only rent very basic bicycles, nowadays you have plenty of choice. Would you like some assistance and go for an electric bike, or take the kids or pets with you in a cozy cargo bike? You can also try a road bike or (electric) mountain bike. There are even electric Rickshaws to carry adults effortlessly!
Carefree bike rental
With most bike rental companies you are insured against damage and theft. Get a flat tire? Then call the breakdown service. That's the service you pay for. Because that's the big disadvantage of renting bikes on vacation: it costs money. Bringing your own bike costs, at best, some extra fuel along the way. And in high season, your favorite bike may no longer be available. In this regard, it is often best to book in advance.
Bring your own bike on vacation
If you choose to take your own bike, then you can enjoy cycling on your own familiar bike. With those handy panniers, for example, and a saddle you are used to. You will also have a bike available from the very first moment. If you arrive at your destination early in the morning or late at night, you can cycle around before the local bike rental opens. Just be sure to bring your bike key, too. You wouldn't be the first to arrive at your destination with your bike neatly locked and the key still at home in a kitchen drawer.
